A consortium of ecologists at the University of New Mexico asked presenter to integrate human/social research and urban ecology into their research program. This presentation is based on research in progress in the city of Albuquerque. Time permitting the presentation will have four parts. First, the story of an emergent transdisciplinary research question, namely, the co-evolution of population growth and land use change. Second, the nonlinear analysis of population growth emphasizing problems with time aspect. Third, the social, economic and political processes that make up urban land use change. And fourth, preliminary outlines of an agent based model to clarify the argument that answers the question.
